Apple Pie – No Sugar Added Pie

My father in law was diabetic. I learned to make this pie for him. It is still pie and it is still sweet. But it has no added sugar and it is very sweet because you start out with very sweet apples. It doesn't have anything but good stuff.


6-8 Red Delicious, Gala, Fuji or any other kind of very sweet apples
About 1/4 cup apple cider or Apple juice. (I have even used lemonade.)
About 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
About 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
About 1/4 teaspoon ginger
Dash of salt and dash of pepper.

1 package rolled crust or you can make your own

FILLING: Peel Apples and core them with apple corer. Cube apples into quite small pieces so that you don't have to precook the apples and drop into a large bowl. Add all ingredients and toss until apples are completely covered with spices.

CRUST: I like to dust the counter top surface with flour before I roll out the pie crust. The crust should be at room temperature before you try to roll it out. Otherwise, it will crack. If you wait until it is too warm, it will stick and you won't be able to unroll it.

Place the apple mixture in the pie crust. We have a lot of fun decorating the top pie crust with stars, flowers, or leaves. Cover the pie. Trim the edges and seal with a small fork. Wrap crust edges with aluminum foil to prevent them from burning before pie is ready.

Bake at 400° for 45 minutes. Remove aluminum and bake another 15-20 minutes until pie is golden.

This pie will be moist and delicious without the added sugar. As it cools it will get less runny.  Enjoy.
